Buddy, I think you somehow swilled a case of ditch water in your assessment of Bass Pale Ale. If you had the slightest clue as to what to look for in a British style Pale Ale, you'd see that its 'blandness' is mistaken for the lack of large-vat carbonation that your commercial lager-styled beers possess. Although, the fact that your taste buds could have long rotted out of your skull from drinking cheap, garbage light beers may contribute to the low rating you gave Bass. Cheers!

I agree with captain hops. Its a good beer. I am not made of money. Many times I have been pacing the beer isle looking at yuengling, and then sam addams, then yuengling. Sometimes sam wins, sometimes yueng wins. It depends on how much money I want to spend.

Yuengling is my go to inexpensive beer. If somehow that means that I don't know anything about beer.. then so be it.

I also live in western ny. I really don't see yuengling marketed very much at all. Its mostly all lebatt blue, which I might add is also a beer that I enjoy from time to time.

This is the closest beer I have ever had to real German beer in the states. Please don't drink it right out of the bottle, pour it in a glass and let it breathe a few minutes before tasting. It’s excellent. I am just so surprised that it is not more popular than it is. Thank you Kroger for carrying it!!!

On a recent trip to the capital for the Brewer's Association event SAVOR, there were many discussions about the rising cost of beers and festival fees throughout the country. An even greater concern was around those patrons choosing to "Sammet a beer" in protest of these fee hikes. To "Sammet a beer" means to consume about half of its intended contents and leave the remaining as a symbol similar to flying the flag at half mast. This protest was seen througout the two day event and was disturbing to say the least. The brewers and hosts of the event have done their best to provide quality beers at reasonable prices for many years. The bottom line is when the cost of beer ingredients goes up, you've got to make a profit somewhere otherwise you go out of business. Respect your local brewers and DON'T "SAMMET A BEER!"

I once had an interesting conversation with a very knowledgeable hop merchant - he said prior to being taken over by Interbrew (aka Stella Artois / InBev, etc) Bass's flagship brew had a defined hop character, from the use of particular UK varieties (Northdown & Challenger, if memory serves). They had contracts with growers, via the hop merchants to guarantee the supply of their favoured hops.

Soon after the business was sold, the story was that the new owners decided it made more economic sense not to pay a premium for expensive low-ish alpha-acid UK varities, but to buy on the open world market - i.e. whoever was selling alpha-acid at the cheapest price (China, Russia?) basically regardless of flavour.

I live in good old Pottsville, Pa. Home of Yeungling. This beer is idolized here, every car has a bumper sticker with the logo anymore.......... there's even store's opening up that only sell yeungling merchandise. This beer is amazing when you live here because every sip means something. There's alot of pride that goes into drinking yeungling, i can't drink any other beer but it. If you go to a party and bring a case of bud with you, then it will go untouched....... bring a case of lager and it's GONE!!! and you are the man.

Bass is one of the beers which can be very ordinary or world class depending on the circumstances. It's clearly at its best as a well kept cask ale and even then it's often sold too green. But I've had some superb pints served by gravity ; it seems to put on weight and is so different from the sorry stuff in bottles or cans.
